What “algorithmic trading” actually means (a plain-English guide)
Algorithmic trading just means following a defined set of rules automatically. It's a discipline tool, not a crystal ball.

"Algorithmic trading" sounds like a black box built by people in lab coats. The reality is simpler.
The plain definition
An algorithm is just a set of instructions. Algorithmic trading means executing trades automatically according to predefined rules — rules you can write in plain language: if these conditions are met, place this order, with this size, inside these risk limits.
That's it. The rules can be simple or sophisticated, but the core idea is the same: the decision is defined in advance, and a computer carries it out consistently.
What it is — and isn't
- It is a way to be consistent, fast, and unemotional about execution.
- It is how most institutional execution already works.
- It isn't a prediction engine. A good algorithm manages risk and execution; it doesn't know the future.
- It isn't inherently risky or safe — it inherits the quality of the rules you give it.
Why it went mainstream
At the institutional level, automated execution stopped being novel years ago — it's among the most widely adopted applications of automation in capital markets. The reasons are unglamorous: software doesn't get tired, doesn't get scared, and watches every position at once.
The newer development is that the same category of capability — define rules, execute automatically, enforce hard limits — is now reaching individuals through their own accounts. Which makes the boring parts the important parts: the limits you set and the testing you do before going live. An algorithm is only as good as the plan behind it.
